The Thorpe Willoughby Table Tennis Club was formed in 1978 and until 1992 played at the church on Fox Lane. Once the Thorpe Willoughby Sports Association clubhouse was built, we transferred there.
Club night has always been on a Wednesday, and from the start we’ve had a thriving junior section as well as a friendly, competitive adult section. In the beginning, until we acquired a hut in which to keep the tables, they were stored in a member’s garage. This involved the tables being transported on the roof rack of a car, and on one memorable occasion, they came off as the car went round a corner. Luckily they survived!
We joined the Selby Table Tennis League in 1979, putting in one team – a mix of teenagers and adults. Home matches were played in the portable cabin that used to be behind the church. Since then we’ve had anything up to six teams in the league, and have twice been runners-up in the first division. From our juniors, one has played for England, several for Yorkshire and for Selby, including one who was the top Cadet in Yorkshire.
Our policy has always been to coach and encourage the youngsters and integrate them into league play. Throughout all these years, we’ve always had a waiting list. So, any junior who would like to play table tennis, would be well advised to get their name down as soon as possible. We have three good tables, and currently have three teams in the Selby League, but we’re hoping to increase that next year. Matches at Thorpe are played on a Thursday.
Adults on Wednesdays include both league players and social players. Current age of adults is 16-80+, so any age is welcome. Ours has always been a very friendly club, our main aim being to enjoy table tennis. We play from the beginning of September to the end of March and Club night on Wednesday starts at…..
